Mr. Nguyen Huu Cau was born in 1947 (year of the Pig), Rach Gia, Kien Giang Province who has been a political prisoner up to 37 years in prison in Vietnam.
(5 years in a labor camp, and 32 years in prison for being accused as against the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam).
Nguyen Huu Cau name was at the top of the HWR Top Ten Most Concerned Prisoners List among of more than 600 prisoners of conscience currently being detained in Vietnam.
He is former local captain veteran, Army of Republic of Vietnam who was released in late 1981, after spending more than 5 years in rehabilitation prison.
In 1982, he denounced the crimes of Kien Giang province’s communist party members with the evidence.
Police arrested Nguyen Huu Cau with the reason to investigate his denounce.
He was sentenced to death on charges of slandering government officials, together with the charges against the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
In 1985 he was held incommunicado in a prison camp in the deep forest.
Easter 1986 he was baptized by his inmate fellow, Priest Nguyen Cong Doan, and was named St. Joan Baptista.
In the communist prisons, the religious activities are prohibited, but his faith in the Savior had helped him survive, overcome extremely desperation periods.
He has a talent in writing poetry, Nguyen Tu Si is a pen name. With a music gifted, he has composed so many songs and long poetry.
These compositions were the evidences that the communist party used to convict him of fighting against the state, but the main reason he was sentenced to death because he dared to denounce the crimes of Kien Giang province’s communist party members. He has strong evidence of direct interviews with the witnesses who used to be raped by the communist officers.
He claimed the crimes that the communist officers have done such as: murdering, drug dealing, abusing power, and corrupting.
He appealed the Death penalty to the higher court, so the case was brought to the appellate court in Saigon, but this appellate court lasted only 60 minutes on 05.24.1987.
Result: The case was reduced from death sentence to life imprisonment
He has been sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of fighting against the government based on his composition "Pray our Father," according to the Indictment of the director of the Investigation Institute.
The judge said that, “Nguyen Huu Cau composed the song name The Tears of God showing that he is still dreaming of the return of the American Empire. He considers American Empire as his parents in order to beg for the leftover food.”
For those slanders, he has been appealing for 28 years since 1982.
Under the pressure from the world, the international press, human rights organizations, and his declining health (nearly deaf, and one blind ey), he eventually returned home at 9 pm on March 21, 2014.
The complaint letter that he signed on 08/24/2009, which he asked Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Quang to help to send out, was the 500th letter that he had sent to Hanoi, but he had never had any answer.
He was held incommunicado in the political prison, ward K2, Z30A, Xuan Loc ward, Dong Nai province.
His granddaughter, Tran Phan Yen Nhi, 14 years old and her family visited him for the first time in her life.
She then wrote a letter to Human Rights Watch to ask for help. She also asked to be in jailed for her grandfather.
Spending in hardship years in the communist prison, he remained his spirit and declined to plead guilty nor seek pardon by the irrational and unfair verdict of the communist dictatorial regime.
